40th International Film Festival Rotterdam 26 January – 6 February 2011 PRESS RELEASE January 7, 2011 agnès b. and Maison Martin Margiela in ‘Out of Fashion’ The Out of Fashion program of the 40th International Film Festival Rotterdam (26 January – 6 February 2011) reveals how fashion and film inspire and influence one another through a film program and an exhibition in the RoT(T)Terdam gallery. Designers agnès b. and Maison Martin Margiela have compiled a film program featuring their own work and will set up an exclusive film installation. Out of Fashion opens on 27 January 2011 with a fashion performance by Japanese visual artist Pyuupiru. In cooperation with Glamcult Independent Style Paper, IFFR programmer Inge de Leeuw has compiled four film programs in the form of a ‘digital fashion magazine’ featuring work by Kenneth Anger, The Quay Brothers and Hussein Chalayan, among others. Glamcult Studio also supplied the design for the exhibition. Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion is also organising four discussions on fashion and film. Black Swan, the new feature film from director Darren Aronofsky, starring Natalie Portman (picture), also receives a special screening in Out of Fashion owing to the hotly debated costume designs by US designer duo Rodarte. Digital fashion magazines will transfer the structure of a fashion magazine to the big screen. The film programs will open with a cover film, such as Flashback by fashion photographer Joost Vandebrug. The body of the program is made up of advertising campaign films, such as Harmony Korine’s act da fool for Proenza Schouler, and film editorials that examine a specific theme in greater detail. The film Claremont, for example, made by director Ari Marcopoulos for US designer Adam Kimmel, will screen as part of the subculture editorial. Exhibition During the festival, The Out of Fashion exhibition can be seen, free of charge in RoT(T)Terdam, Roodkapje’s temporary exhibition space on de Meent in Rotterdam. The exhibition deals with the creation of a number of the fashion films included in the film program and the relationship between fashion and cinema. These include: a film installation created specially for IFFR by and with Maison Martin Margiela; never-before-seen films by agnès b.; a storyboard and maquette by Anna Nicole Ziesche for her film Childhood Storage, a storyboard and still photographs from the film Aanteni by Todd Cole and Rodarte and exceptional films of fashion presentations by German/French brand Bless. Premsela: talking about fashion and film Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion is organising a number of in-depth discussions under the title The Perfect Cut: Reflections on Film and Fashion, in which four experts will discuss fashion film from a range of viewpoints. In Cinerama on Saturday 29 January, filmmaker Zach Gold, who recently made the film String Theory (picture) for A.F. Vandevorst (screening in the film program) will be talking about his work. On 28 January in De Unie, photographer Dino Dinco will be talking about his work. Also in De Unie, on 4 February, Alexander Fury, director of SHOWstudio (a digital platform for the distribution of fashion films), will talk about his work and the importance of SHOWstudio. On Saturday 5 February in Cinerama, art director Marc Ascoli – who has worked for Jil Sander, Chloe and Yohji Yamamoto, among others – will discuss the importance of film for the positioning and cachet of fashion brands. Fashion Film Competition As part of Out of Fashion, IFFR has asked a number of young designers to make a film that expresses their fashion concept. The best entries to this Fashion Film Competition will receive cinema screenings on Sunday 30 January 2011. A jury made up of Margreeth Olsthoorn (owner of the MghO and Mgh2O fashion stores in Rotterdam), Rogier Vlaming (editor-in-chief of Glamcult) and filmmaker Zach Gold will choose the winner. Out of Fashion is an initiative by International Film Festival Rotterdam and was made possible through a collaboration by IFFR, Premsela and Glamcult Independent Style Paper, with support from SNS Reaal Fonds and RoT(T)Terdam.
