IFFR records strong visitor numbers during impactful edition Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border wins the Audience Award.M. Raihan Halim’s progressive and provocative Malaysian comedy La Luna brought the 2024 edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) to a close, receiving a resounding ovation at packed screens for its European premiere.
The festival recorded 253,500 visits across its programme of 424 films, including 183 world premieres, complemented with a variety of multi-disciplinary programmes including Art Directions, IFFR Talks and more. Highlights from the Talks programme included Sandra Hüller, Marco Bellocchio, Billy Woodberry and Amanda Kramer with Debbie Harry who stated that “film festivals are such an important part for directors and filmmakers, especially for independence”, chiming strongly with IFFR’s mission of championing independent filmmakers and artists, creating space for dialogue and expanding people’s views of the world and each other.
The festival also presented its final prize with Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border winning the Audience Award. As previously announced, Tanaka Toshihiko’s Rei won IFFR’s coveted Tiger Award, while the Iranian drama The Old Bachelor (dir. Oktay Baraheni) won the VPRO Big Screen Award.
IFFR 2024
Festival Director Vanja Kaludjercic: “This edition we saw with great pleasure how our discoveries found their audiences. From the joy of our opening night, to the excitement of welcoming superstars and cinematic giants, to witnessing the blossoming of future greats like the Tiger Award winner, there was a special atmosphere at the festival this edition. We take pride in making a programme that foregrounds the unexpected and unique – and that challenges and enriches. Our Focus programmes, like the first-of-their kind retrospectives on Chilean cinema in exile, Italian genre masters Manetti Bros. and Hong Kong provocateur Scud stand as a testament to that and the spaces we create. As we look ahead, we see that our ideas and aspirations connect strongly with the audience, strengthening us for the years to come.”
Managing Director Clare Stewart: “We are thrilled that, despite a reduction in scale to match our resources, the 53rd edition of IFFR has maintained its public reach, exceeded ticket sales targets and increased our overall occupancy rate to 75%. This affirms our strategic focus on ‘impact over scale’ and puts us in a great position to continue the recalibration of IFFR for future years.
As part of our impact focus, we are also working to amplify the connections between our programmes and talent initiatives, and it was terrific to see increased interest in the Darkroom work-in-progress programme – now in its second year – where industry guests get a first look at projects supported by the Hubert Bals Fund and CineMart. Our focus on developing younger audiences for the festival’s public programme is also underpinned by our essential work in the field of film and audiovisual education where we continue to host a multitude of school groups during the festival, delivering important social value including classes and workshops for children in hospitals and for young refugees.”

IFFR 2024

25 January – 4 February 2024
Rotterdam, 2 February 2024
Rei and The Old Bachelor take top IFFR 2024 awards Winners of the 2024 Tiger Award and VPRO Big Screen Award announced.International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) announces the 2024 winners from its two feature competitions: the Tiger Competition and the Big Screen Competition. The prizes were handed out during the IFFR Awards Ceremony on Friday 2 February, along with the FIPRESCI, NETPAC and Youth Jury awards.
IFFR Competition winners 2024
Tiger Competition
IFFR’s trademark Tiger Competition celebrates the innovative and adventurous spirit of up-and-coming filmmakers. From the 14 titles presented in the 2024 edition, the jury granted three prizes: the Tiger Award, worth €40,000, and two Special Jury Awards, worth €10,000 each.
Rei (Japan) by Tanaka Toshihiko wins the Tiger Award 2024.
The jury stated: “The jury decided to give the Tiger Award to a burgeoning film director who chose to develop his debut film in a loose and unbounded environment. His strength relies on a collaborative environment centred on the actors, an attention to the power of recitation – and, perhaps most importantly, a taste for performative sequences that operate as discrete units within the overall structure, but which typically resist acting as the power of the different chosen locations slowly emerges. The film’s ending suggests that people dwell in constant threat from the outside world. But they might yet live, together.”
Kiss Wagon (India) by Midhun Murali wins a Special Jury Award.
The jury stated: “Hypnotic – bewildering – heart-racing. A trip on a speed train where our solitudes are mouth to mouth reanimated. The first special jury award goes to a weirdly beautiful and beautifully weird film.”
Flathead (Australia) by Jaydon Martin wins a Special Jury Award.
The jury stated: “This film addresses the people who contributed to society, keep society going and rolling, but not given enough attention and care. The images are powerful and convincing. The cast, in particular the old man, is exceptionally impressive. The execution is calm but touching. The second jury award goes to a film that is a naturalistic and realistic film at its best.”
The Tiger Competition Jury consisted of Marco Müller, Ena Sendijarević, Nadia Turincev, Billy Woodberry, and Herman Yau.

Big Screen Competition
The Big Screen Competition presented a selection of 12 titles at IFFR 2024, bridging the gap between popular, classic and arthouse cinema. A jury of film lovers decided the winner of the VPRO Big Screen Award. The winning film receives a guaranteed theatrical release in the Netherlands and will be broadcast on Dutch TV by VPRO and NPO. The award is accompanied by a €30,000 prize, shared equally between the filmmaker and the distributor who will release the film.
The Old Bachelor (Iran) by Oktay Baraheni wins the VPRO Big Screen Award 2024.
The jury stated: “Gripping from start to finish, this film left a strong impression on the jury long after it had ended. Exploring powerful themes of patriarchy, misogyny, love, violence and tragedy, this film is a masterclass in storytelling, through its gripping, nuanced dialogue, exquisite attention to detail and its development of tension, which simmers throughout the film until it reaches boiling point in the final, explosive act. It is a deeply visceral cinematic experience that takes you captive along with its characters as their world encloses around them. We are sure that the viewers will appreciate the powerful performances from the central cast, who so captivatingly portray a family at breaking point.”
The jury consisted of Samina Khan, Sylvie de Leeuwe, Lisa van der Loos, Marcos Silva and Ella de Bruijn.

FIPRESCI Award
A jury of international film journalists from the Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique awarded the FIPRESCI Award to their standout Tiger Competition title.
The FIPRESCI Award 2024 goes to Kiss Wagon (India) by Midhun Murali.
The jury stated: “We decided to unanimously award a film that astounded us with its epic superhero storytelling and its bold defying of cinematic conventions. With its intricate collage of styles, genres, and themes, and elaborate, artisanal, very personal craft, it reminded us that cinema is a limitless space for play and invention, which constantly renews itself. We would like to celebrate its sheer spunk and freshness in approaching the grave issue of lack of liberties and of sexual and gender repression in a manner that combines humour, spectacle and intrigue.”
The jury was Ela Bittencourt, Dārta Ceriņa, Panagiotis Kotzathanasis, Antonios Lagarias and Ronald Rovers.

NETPAC Award
The NETPAC Award is awarded to the best Asian feature film by a jury from the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema.
Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust (India, France, Germany) by Ishan Shukla wins the NETPAC Award 2024.
The jury stated: “The NETPAC Award at the IFFR 2024 goes to a film that bravely but not aggressively tackles the problems in current politics and in society, not only in Asia but worldwide. It is a film with a universal approach, done in a spectacular style with a clear vision, with a lot of astonishing ideas and with a great sense of humour."
The jury was Elena Larionova Haug, Donsaron Kovitvanitcha and Andreas Ungerböck.

Youth Jury Award
The Youth Jury Award, selected by a panel of young local film lovers aged between 16 and 22, goes to Levante (Brazil, France, Uruguay) by Lillah Halla.
The jury stated: “The film that we chose is daring, fearless and representative of the turbulent experiences and emotions that young people go through. It's a film that finds a balance between being challenging and resonating with a young audience, one with a promising longevity, a film that remains with its viewers long after they’ve left the movie theatre. Moreover, the film we chose spreads a powerful message that touched our hearts that we, as young people, would like to stand behind.”

Rotterdam, 2 februari 2024

The Old Bachelor (Iran) van Oktay Baraheni wint de VPRO Big Screen Award 2024.

NETPAC Award

Three titles receive equal Tiger Short Awards, each worth €5,000.
PRESS RELEASE
53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam
25 January – 4 February 2024
Rotterdam, 29 January 2024
Tiger Short Competition winners 2024 Three titles receive equal Tiger Short Awards, each worth €5,000, as the KNF Award winner and nomination for European Short Film Award are also announced. From the 21 titles in the Tiger Short Competition at IFFR 2024, Crazy Lotus (Thailand) by Naween Noppakun, Few Can See (Ireland) by Frank Sweeney and Workers’ Wings (Kosovo) by Ilir Hasanaj are the three to receive Tiger Short Awards. Each equal prize is worth €5,000. I Would Rather Be a Stone (Croatia) by Ana Hušman was selected to compete for the next European Short Film Award, whilst a jury from the KNF (Circle of Dutch Film Journalists) awarded the KNF Award to Daphne was a torso ending in leaves (Italy, Greece) by Catriona Gallagher.
On the Tiger Short Jury 2024 was former Tiger Short Award-winner Mónica Lima, writer, programmer, and researcher Yasmina Price and distributor, curator and festival producer. Jade Wiseman.
Naween Noppakun, Ilir Hasanaj, Frank Sweeney, Catriona Gallagher and Ana Hušman
The jury on Crazy Lotus:
“Blurring the lines between reality and a peculiar, virtual world, this film is a wild ride. With its bold stylistic choices and unique tone, this film bends, twists, warps and questions. Philosophical yet funny, mesmerising yet kitschy, we were carried away to a distorted dimension, full of possibilities and meanings, with for background a cityscape in constant flux. It’s a weird, pink, flashy and delightful oddity that will leave no one indifferent.”
Still from the film Crazy Lotus
The jury on Few Can See:
“History lives on shaky, uncertain grounds. Through imaginative reenactments and dynamic manipulation, this film exposes an always-present crisis around truth and evidence, document and fiction. Even as a colonial struggle over land and life is destroying another geography in the present, this film’s setting of 1980s Northern Ireland is a reminder of still active histories of repression and resistance. Using archival materials and oral histories to fill in what was erased through broadcast censorship, this film is a lesson in recovering the past.”
Still from the film Few Can See
The jury on Workers’ Wings:
“A testimony to the labour of working class people, made with an empathetic and gentle tone, this film portrays tragic events in the lives of individuals whose scars and dignity are beautifully amplified by an honest and humble cinematic style. The film’s formal elegance and restraint are impressively infused with subtle and captivating aesthetic qualities – chromatic, rhythmic and haptic.”

European Short Film Award 2024 nomination
IFFR is one of a series of film festivals throughout Europe that submits a candidate for the short film category of the European Film Awards. The jury nominated I Would Rather Be a Stone (Croatia) by Ana Hušman for the European Short Film Award.
The jury on I Would Rather Be a Stone:
“Through a lyrical and sensorial attention to a landscape threatened by ecological and economic changes, this filmmaker presents a disarmingly caring gaze, sewed together by a masterfully poetic narration. A region of Croatia is shown through a moving tapestry of personal and collective memories, to tenderly consider the traces we leave behind.”

KNF Award 2024
A jury from the Kring van Nederlandse Filmjournalisten (Circle of Dutch Film Journalists) selected their own highlight to receive the KNF award: Daphne was a torso ending in leaves (Italy, Greece) by Catriona Gallagher. The jury was Ronald Glasbergen, Sebastiaan Khouw and Ard Vijn.
The KNF jury on Daphne was a torso ending in leaves:
“The members of the KNF Critics Jury saw all 21 Tiger Shorts and choosing a winner wasn't easy this year. Among us three, we had no less than nine favourites to discuss. Debating the last three took some time as we all had a different personal choice. But rest assured, we are all satisfied with our winner.”
“Many films were experimental in nature this year, but the winning short managed to use its style to support the story it told. It was also technically accomplished, showing an almost tactile playfulness between analogue and digital formats. And it was an interesting concept, an artistic researching of its subject, moving from a person, to a myth, to art, to objects with everyday use. The techniques used, the images used, are an homage to art in general, and to film specifically.”

Elke winnaar ontvangt €5.000 prijzengeld.
I Would Rather Be a Stone (Kroatië) van Ana Hušman is genomineerd voor de European Short Film Award.

De jury over Few Can See:
Film still van Few Can See

European Short Film Award 2024 nominatie
De jury nomineerde daarnaast I Would Rather Be a Stone (Kroatië) van Ana Hušman voor de European Short Film Award.
