International Film Festival Rotterdam PRESS RELEASE 27 August 2012 Fall festivals select 13 films supported by Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund and CineMart The Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals have selected thirteen films supported by the IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund or launched as project during CineMart (see full list below). Furthermore, both the Toronto and San Sebastian festivals screen winners from Rotterdam’s 2012 Tiger Awards Competitions. Earlier this month in Locarno, Song Fang (China) was awarded the Leopard for Best First Feature for her Hubert Bals Fund supported film MEMORIES LOOK AT ME. In Venice, Belgian couple Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth competes in Venezia69 with THE FIFTH SEASON. Their film, launched at CineMart 2011, also screens in Toronto’s Wavelengths programme. Venice’s Orrizonti section includes three new films by women filmmakers who all received grants for script development from the Hubert Bals Fund: WADJDA by Haifaa Al Mansour (Saudi Arabia), LEONES by Jazmín López (Argentina) and SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN by Yesim Ustaoglu (Turkey). In Toronto, four Rotterdam-backed films will see their world premieres. Peng Tao (China) will present his first feature film THE CREMATOR. He launched his film as project at CineMart 2009 and the Hubert Bals Fund supported him for script development in 2010. Experienced filmmaker Licinio Azevedo (Mozambique) introduces his new film VIRGIN MARGARIDA that was supported by the Hubert Bals Fund for script development in 2007. Both launched at CineMart 2008 as projects, Mikael Marcimain (Sweden) presents his CALL GIRL and Sophie Fiennes (UK) reunites with philosopher Slavoj Žižek for THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO IDEOLOGY. Following their Cannes premieres, the Toronto film festival also selected films by Sergei Loznitsa (IN THE FOG), Carlos Reygadas (POST TENEBRAS LUX) and Pablo Stoll (3). All three films started out internationally as project at Rotterdam’s CineMart. Furthermore Toronto screens three winners from Rotterdam’s 2012 Tiger Awards Competitions: feature film CLIP by Serbian filmmaker Maja Milos and the short films BIG IN VIETNAM by French actress-filmmaker Mati Diop and SPRINGTIME by Dutch visual artist-filmmaker Jeroen Eisinga. The San Sebastian film festival has selected Scott Graham’s first feature length film SHELL as a world premiere in its New Directors Competition. Graham presented SHELL as project at CineMart 2010. San Sebastian also screens two Rotterdam-backed films that were first presented in Cannes. Reygadas’ POST TENEBRAS LUX, launched at CineMart 2011, competed for the Palme d’Or and Juan Andrés Arango’s THE BEACH, supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, was selected in Un Certain Regard. Furthermore San Sebastian has included Tiger Award 2012 winner CLIP by Maja Milos in its Zabaltegi Specials section. Fall festivals select 13 films supported by Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund and CineMart

The Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals have selected thirteen films supported by the IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund or launched as project during CineMart (see full list below).
Furthermore, both the Toronto and San Sebastian festivals screen winners from Rotterdam’s 2012 Tiger Awards Competitions. Earlier this month in Locarno, Song Fang (China) was awarded the Leopard for Best First Feature for her Hubert Bals Fund supported film MEMORIES LOOK AT ME.
