Garage and IFFR team up to present film program in Moscow’s Gorky Park

Samenvatting
International Film Festival Rotterdam PRESS RELEASE 21 August 2012 Garage and IFFR team up to present film program in Moscow’s Gorky Park From 30 August to 16 September 2012, GARAGE SCREEN will present the film program Deconstructing Cinematic Realities in Gorky Park, Moscow. The program – organized in collaboration with the International Film Festival Rotterdam – addresses cinema’s transgression of the traditional boundary that separates fiction from reality. The program features twenty-six works, both full-length films and shorts by directors from all over the world, many of which premiered during the 2012 International Film Festival Rotterdam. In these films the boundaries between fiction and reality are blurred, often deconstructing and layering the narrative to create something completely new. In contrast to the traditional cinematic model of a ‘self-contained narrative’, these filmmakers are developing a new language of alternate and heightened reality by using new technologies or by playing with existing cinematic conventions like editing, scripting and sound. Highlights from the program include Eduardo Nunes’ Sudoeste, a beautiful black-and-white exploration of time and of life in a magical village on Brazil’s coast that premiered in the Tiger Awards Competition of IFFR 2012; Davide Manuli’s La Leggenda di Kaspar Hauser, a surreal post-Western, also shot in black-and-white, with music by Vitalic and with Vincent Gallo as both Sheriff and the Pusher, that premiered in IFFR’s Spectrum section; Francophrenia (or Don’t Kill Me, I Know Where the Baby Is), a mini-thriller comprised of television footage of actor James Franco's guest-starring appearances on the American daytime drama ‘General Hospital’ that was first shown in IFFR’s Spectrum section and a series of four shorts by Finnish artist and filmmaker Pilvi Takala shown as part of IFFR’s 2012 theme section ‘Signals: For Real’. On August 30, 2012, Garage will host a talk with acclaimed Sudoeste director Eduardo Nunes concerning the notion of time in cinema. Film selection by Olya Borissova (GARAGE SCREEN) and Inge de Leeuw (programmer of the International Film Festival Rotterdam). Garage recently relocated from the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage to a new site in Gorky Park, Moscow, which is currently being developed by Rem Koolhaas’s OMA, to be opened in 2013. In the meantime, the first phase of its program in the park will launch in September 2012 in a temporary pavilion designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. In the longer term, Garage plans to develop an 8,500 square meter hexagonal pavilion in the park. This historic 1920s structure, which consists of six sections built around a central courtyard, was first constructed to house the first All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, but later became a pre-war exhibition space for Soviet artists.
