CineMart selects 33 film projects for 2013 edition

CineMart, the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s co-production market has selected thirty-three projects for its 30th edition, to be held from 27-30 January 2013. Some 800 potential co-financiers will meet to speak about the new projects from reputed filmmakers Kobayashi Masahiro, Lucrecia Martel, Radu Jude, David Verbeek, Yorgos Lanthimos and others, as well as from many upcoming film talents. The selection includes four ‘Art:Film’ projects and four projects from this year’s Boost! Program. (See full line up below)

CineMart managers Marit van den Elshout and Jacobine van der Vloed about the 2013 selection: “We are proud to present a very strong selection for the 30th CineMart. From an overwhelmingly rich and varied collection of entries, we chose 33 projects that will certainly be welcomed and raise much interest among the potential partners. Despite a still difficult market, CineMart sees the large majority of our previous selections in production and, once realised, premiering at prestigious festivals, getting distributed and thus finding audiences. We are excited to see many former CineMart titles coming back in this year’s festival programme, including some in Hivos Tiger Award Competition.”

While continuing this very productive connection, we keep developing initiatives like the very successful Rotterdam Lab, the Boost!-program and Art:Film, the promising cross-over initiative between visual arts and cinema, in collaboration with CPH:DOX.”

This year CineMart welcomes back filmmakers already connected to the Rotterdam film festival, the Hubert Bals Fund or CineMart itself. In 2008, IFFR showed Kobayashi’s work in a retrospective program. This year the festival screens his latest film JAPAN’S TRAGEDY as a European premiere and CineMart presents his new project JUST LIKE LOVE.
Well-known and experienced filmmakers Lucrecia Martel (LA NIÑA SANTA, LA MUJER SIN CABEZA), Yorgos Lanthimos (DOGTOOTH, ALPS), Alex van Warmerdam (LITTLE TONY, GRIMM, WAITER) and Radu Jude (THE HAPPIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD) return to Rotterdam with their new projects.

Previous works by Sergio Caballero (FINISTERRAE), Martijn Maria Smits (C'EST DÉJÀ L'ÉTÉ), David Verbeek (SHANGHAI TRANCE), Wichanon Somumjarn (IN APRIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THERE WAS A FIRE) and Dominga Sotomayor (DE JUEVES A DOMINGO) premiered in IFFR’s Hivos Tiger Awards Competition. All present their new projects at CineMart.

Upcoming talents Maryna Vroda (CROSS COUNTRY), Bikas Ranjan Mishra (DANCE OF GANESHA) and Johannes Nyholm (director of YouTube hit LAS PALMAS) showed their short films in Rotterdam. They will all present their first feature film projects.
After her successful first feature film CORPO CELESTE screened in Cannes and many other festivals, Alice Rohrwacher presents her second feature project.

The Boost! projects in CineMart 2013 by Pablo Stoll, Michel Lipkes, Teboho Edkins and Ognjen Glavonic all received script development grants from the Hubert Bals Fund, script coaching from Binger Filmlab and will now be showcased at CineMart.

Next to the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award (€30,000 for a European co-production) and the ARTE France Cinema Award (€7,000), CineMart adds a third prize to its roster: the WorldView New Genres Fund Development Award (€5,000). WorldView is a CBA [Commonwealth Broadcasting Association] Project that aims to improve UK public understanding and awareness of the developing world via the mainstream broadcast and digital media. WorldView supports filmmakers who aim to bring the richness and diversity of the wider world to UK and international audiences. The winners will be announced during the co-production market’s Closing Night Party on Wednesday 30 January.
